Brendan Von Briesen

Brendan was graduated from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington (USA). He received a Masters in Economic History and a Ph.D. in Contemporary History from the Universitat de Barcelona in 2017. His dissertation (cum laude) focused on the half-dozen guilds responsible for loading, unloading, and transporting maritime cargo in the port of Barcelona. He was awarded the XXIII Ricart I Giralt Research Prize by the Maritime Museum of Barcelona and the Institut Ramon Muntaner for a book dedicated to the history of cargo handling in the port of Tarragona (c.1740-1940). Thanks to his continued participation in the “Labor, Institutions, and Gender” research group of the Universitat de Barcelona, he is currently working on a number of areas, including: port and maritime labor history; labor organizations and relations in the guild system, especially with an eye to the development of class consciousness in the form of Journeymen Guilds; and, Latin American political history. His research focuses on organizational strategies in times of conflict and profound social change.
